On the 20th anniversary of our marriage, my wife Wendy Young and I repledged our vows in front of loved ones to commemorate our journey together. We reaffirmed our commitment to go through all the challenges and victories we’ve faced as a couple.

Our love story began unexpectedly at a hockey game where a mutual friend introduced me to Wendy. Eventually, we decided to formalize our relationship over dinner, realizing that together, we could conquer the world.
In 1998, when same-sex marriages were not legally recognized in Canada, Wendy and I, despite our initial aversion to the institution of marriage, fought for the right to choose. We were part of a group of couples who championed a lawsuit that culminated in a landmark Supreme Court victory in 2003, asserting our rights as a same-sex couple.
Our legal battle tested the strength of our relationship, with moments of doubt and fear. However, the unwavering support we received from unexpected quarters bolstered our resolve. We proudly led the Pride parade in our city and exchanged vows in front of a large audience, symbolizing our commitment to each other.
Marriage has brought its share of challenges and triumphs over the past two decades. Our vow renewal this year reaffirmed the significance of our decision to stand united. It underscored the enduring joy of being legally recognized as a married couple and witnessing the validation of other same-sex relationships.
