“Wildfires Force Evacuations in Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula”

-

Hundreds of residents in Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula have been forced to evacuate their homes due to raging wildfires. Communities such as Small Point–Adam’s Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove, Kingston, and Western Bay have been affected, with some residents on standby for potential evacuation.

The wildfire near Kingston led to evacuations in several areas, including Ochre Pit Cove. Another fire near Holyrood resulted in partial evacuations, while the Town of Conception Bay South evacuated an area west of Seal Cove Road.

Provincial fire duty officer Jeff Motty described the fire season as challenging, with conditions exacerbating fire behavior. The fire near Holyrood doubled in size overnight to over 700 hectares. Crews and aircraft are being deployed to combat the fires.

The cause of the fires is under investigation, with concerns of possible arson reported by residents. Motty emphasized the importance of adhering to fire bans to prevent further incidents.

Meteorologist Justin Boudreau mentioned a slight improvement in firefighting conditions, with temperatures expected to decrease. However, air quality concerns persist, and residents are advised to limit outdoor activities.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with efforts to combat the fires ongoing. C.B.S. Mayor Darrin Bent assured residents of no immediate threat to structures and the availability of evacuation facilities if needed.
