Heather O’Neill, an acclaimed Canadian writer, was inspired to craft a serialized novel set in the Montreal Metro, a place that had always fueled her creativity and provided solace. The narrative, initially serialized in the Montreal Gazette, revolves around Valentine, a young orphan who encounters her doppelganger in the subway. Recently, the complete story was launched as a novel titled “Valentine in Montreal,” enriched with fresh illustrations by Heather’s daughter and longtime artistic partner, Arizona.

The Montreal Metro holds a special significance in the bond between Heather and Arizona. Arizona fondly recalls cherished moments of her childhood spent riding the metro with her mother. Despite lacking a car, they embarked on long journeys together using public transportation. Arizona shared in an interview with Q’s Tom Power that her mother read to her aloud during their metro rides, creating a cozy and familiar atmosphere that felt like home.

Heather’s life took an unexpected turn when she became a mother at the age of 20 after graduating from McGill University. This pivotal event reshaped her aspirations, shifting her focus from a bohemian writer’s lifestyle to nurturing her daughter’s curiosity and wonder for the world. Her debut novel, “Lullabies for Little Criminals,” released in 2006, received critical acclaim for its poignant portrayal of Baby, a 12-year-old girl navigating life in Montreal’s red-light district with her drug-addicted father, Jules.

Heather’s writing, characterized by a blend of childhood whimsy and raw realism, captivates readers with its exploration of challenging themes. Arizona, reflecting on their collaboration on “Valentine in Montreal,” noted the seamless connection she felt to her mother’s vision, effortlessly translating it into illustrations that captured the essence of magic woven into the narrative.

The profound bond between Heather and Arizona shines through their creative endeavors, showcasing a shared perspective that transcends words.
