“Prince Edward Island Implements Fire Restrictions Amid Rising Risk”

-

Prince Edward Island has imposed restrictions on outdoor burning due to the ongoing hot and dry weather, which is heightening the risk of wildfires in Atlantic Canada. While fires used for cooking or heat are exempt from the ban, individuals are urged to exercise caution and ensure that the fires are completely extinguished before leaving the area. Other Atlantic provinces have also implemented open-fire bans to address the increased fire hazard.

In response to the elevated fire risk, Nova Scotia has restricted activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and all-terrain vehicle use in wooded areas. Additionally, New Brunswick is dispatching water bombers to assist in combating wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported that the national preparedness level is currently at its highest point, indicating a significant risk of new wildland fires. Mike Montigny, the manager of field services for P.E.I.’s forests, fish, and wildlife division, emphasized that the province is facing similar dry conditions as its neighbors and is closely monitoring the situation to make informed decisions.

Officials are vigilantly analyzing data to ensure the safety of Prince Edward Island residents. Montigny commended Nova Scotia’s proactive measures and stated that similar restrictions may be recommended for P.E.I. if conditions worsen. Meanwhile, Nova Scotia’s restrictions on Crown land are in place until October 15 or until weather conditions improve, with potential fines for violations.

Many of P.E.I.’s wildland firefighters have honed their skills through recent deployments to Yukon, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Montigny highlighted that these firefighters are on standby throughout the fire season, ready to respond when needed.
