An outbreak of salmonella infections linked to specific brands of pistachios and products containing pistachios has led to nine hospitalizations and multiple reported cases. The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed 52 salmonella cases across four provinces between March and July. Quebec has reported the highest number of cases, followed by Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba. Recall warnings have been issued for products from Habibi, Al Mokhtar Food Centre, and Dubai brands that were distributed in Ontario and Quebec.
Among the recalled products is the Dubai brand Pistachio & Knafeh Milk Chocolate, which gained popularity online for its unique combination of pistachio cream and knafeh pieces. The outbreak strains of salmonella were discovered in samples of the recalled Habibi brand pistachios. The Public Health Agency of Canada mentioned that more potential sources might be identified as the investigation progresses. Salmonella, a food-borne bacterial illness, can cause severe infections, especially in vulnerable groups like children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.
It is essential for individuals who suspect they have consumed a recalled product and feel unwell to contact their healthcare provider. The number of actual cases of illness in Canada could be higher than reported due to mild symptoms that may not prompt a doctor’s visit.
