Prime Minister Mark Carney, along with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and several global leaders, have condemned Israel’s recent decision to seize control of Gaza City. Speaking at a press briefing in Trenton, Ont., Carney expressed disapproval of the move, stating it was misguided.
Israel’s security cabinet greenlit the plan to take over the largest city in Gaza, escalating military activities in the war-torn Palestinian region. The decision has sparked widespread backlash both domestically and internationally for prolonging the ongoing conflict.
Carney emphasized that the action would not alleviate the dire humanitarian conditions on the ground, instead, putting hostages’ lives at greater risk. A collective statement issued by foreign ministers from nine nations, including Canada, denounced the Israeli cabinet’s move, citing concerns about exacerbating the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis, endangering hostages, and potentially displacing more civilians.
The joint statement raised alarms about Israel’s intention possibly breaching international humanitarian laws and reiterated that any attempts at annexation or settlement expansion would violate established international regulations.
Carney reiterated Canada’s stance for an immediate ceasefire and demanded the return of all hostages and their remains by Hamas. He emphasized that Hamas should not play a role in future governance and affirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting efforts with allies to achieve peaceful outcomes.
Furthermore, Carney disclosed Canada’s plan to endorse the recognition of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing that Hamas must be excluded from any governance roles.
