Philadelphia Phillies star pitcher Zack Wheeler has been diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome, leading to the need for additional surgery that is anticipated to keep him out of action for six to eight months, the team disclosed on Saturday. Wheeler underwent a surgical procedure on August 18 to address a blood clot in his upper right arm and recently had a follow-up examination.
Following a second opinion, medical experts advised Wheeler to undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the near future. This operation could potentially delay Wheeler’s ability to kick off the 2026 season as scheduled. The 35-year-old pitcher boasted a stellar record this season, going 10-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts covering 149 2/3 innings. He led the National League with 195 strikeouts and was widely regarded as a top contender for the NL Cy Young Award this year, having finished as a runner-up in 2021 and 2024.
