“Regina Native Baer Robertson Excited for Sprint Nationals”

-

Regina native Baer Robertson, a competitive paddler, is accustomed to traveling for tournaments. However, the recent medalist at the 2025 Canada Summer Games expressed excitement about the upcoming sprint national championships, describing it as a “refreshing change.” Robertson mentioned the convenience of being able to return home after the races and sleep in their own bed, a departure from the usual routine of flying out east for national competitions.

At 18 years old, Robertson prepared to participate in the 200-meter and 500-meter canoe sprint races at the ongoing 2025 Canoe Kayak Canada Sprint National Championships at Regina’s Wascana Lake. The event brings together over 800 athletes from various regions in Canada, including Olympians, national team members, and international competitors representing 40 clubs across the country. Competitors are set to engage in canoe and kayak sprint events for both individual and team categories.

Hosted by the Wascana Racing Canoe Club, which Robertson is a member of, the championships are a significant gathering in the competitive canoeing and kayaking community. Jan Hanson, the communications lead for the event’s host committee, emphasized the significance of the championships rotating locations and highlighted Wascana Park’s suitability as a world-class venue for the competition. This marks the fifth time Regina has hosted the championships, with the first occurrence dating back to 2009.

Hanson noted the transformation of the event area since 2009, particularly regarding the addition of shaded areas, essential for the anticipated hot weather during the competition. Despite facing prior incidents of vandalism, including damage to windows at the Pine Island Watch Tower, the Wascana Racing and Canoe Club worked diligently to restore the park’s appeal for the championships.

For spectators seeking prime viewing locations, Pine Island serves as the finish line, with other recommended spots including the vicinity near Wascana Pool and the lookout point for different race start lines. Race sessions will run from 8 a.m. CST to 6 p.m. CST from Tuesday to Saturday, with the Masters division, CanMas, scheduled for Sunday catering to athletes aged 25 and above.
