ABC, a network owned by Walt Disney, announced on Wednesday that it will halt the broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following backlash over comments made by the late-night host regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Nexstar Media Group had previously decided to cease airing the show on its 32 ABC affiliates due to Kimmel’s remarks.
President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, Andrew Alford, criticized Kimmel for his remarks about Kirk’s death, deeming them offensive and insensitive during a crucial period in national political discussions. FCC chair Brendan Carr also called on local broadcasters to discontinue airing the show.
In a segment on Monday, Kimmel expressed dismay over the political reactions to Kirk’s murder, commenting on the attempts by some to distance themselves from the perpetrator. He also mentioned the White House’s acknowledgment of the tragedy, noting the lowering of flags to half-staff and highlighting President Trump’s response to reporters’ questions regarding his emotional state.
This decision to suspend the show comes in the wake of growing criticism and controversy surrounding Kimmel’s comments.
