Renowned fashion designer Tom Ford has reached out to Adele for a role in his upcoming adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel “Cry to Heaven,” as announced by his production company on Wednesday. Ford is taking on the roles of writer, director, and producer for the film, which will mark Adele’s debut as an actress.
Adele is set to be part of a star-studded ensemble cast, joining talents such as Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, George MacKay, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, breakout star Owen Cooper from “Adolescence,” and Hunter Schafer. However, specific details about their roles have not been disclosed yet.
The multi-award-winning singer last released her album “30” in 2021. Instead of embarking on a tour for the album, Adele entertained fans with her “Weekends with Adele” residency in Las Vegas, concluding in 2024 after 100 shows.
Adele adds to the list of singers venturing into acting, following in the footsteps of artists like Charli XCX, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and A$AP Rocky. Rice’s original novel, first published in 1982, is set in the opera world of 18th-century Italy, portraying the lives of two contrasting characters—one born a peasant, the other a Venetian noble.
“Cry to Heaven” will be Ford’s third directorial project, following his debut with the romantic drama “A Single Man” in 2009 and the psychological thriller “Nocturnal Animals” in 2016. The screenplay for the film, as reported by Deadline, was penned by Ford, with production currently underway in London and Rome, targeting a release in fall 2026.
Ford, known for self-financing his movies, emphasized his stance on controlling the underlying rights, stating in a previous interview with The Associated Press in 2016: “I will only ever make a movie if I control the underlying rights.”
