“Air Canada Flight Attendants Vote Overwhelmingly for Strike Action”

-

More than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants may go on strike later this month as they have voted in favor of strike action, as announced by the union representing them. The Air Canada Component of CUPE revealed in a news release that despite months of negotiations, no agreement has been reached on crucial matters such as salaries, work regulations, and uncompensated hours.

The union disclosed that members demonstrated overwhelming support for potential strike action, with a 99.7 percent vote in favor. Wesley Lesosky, the division president, expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s slow progress in addressing members’ concerns and urged Air Canada to engage in more meaningful negotiations.

While a strike vote indicates readiness for a strike, it does not guarantee one will occur. The union warned that a strike could commence as early as August 16 if a resolution is not achieved. Air Canada acknowledged the strike vote outcome, labeling it as a standard step in the negotiation process. The company emphasized its commitment to negotiations and expressed eagerness to resume discussions, emphasizing the importance of reaching an agreement to avoid inconveniencing travelers.

Negotiations between the union and Air Canada have been ongoing following the expiration of the previous 10-year contract in March. The recent strike vote follows the union’s request for conciliation with the federal labor minister in May due to a deadlock in talks.

Although specific demands for the new contract were not detailed by CUPE, the union highlighted concerns regarding stagnant wages relative to inflation. Lesosky cited disparities in pay, stating that entry-level flight attendants’ starting wages have not kept pace with the cost of living over the past decade. Additionally, the union raised issues of uncompensated work hours, pointing out that flight attendants often perform essential duties without proper remuneration.

Lesosky criticized Air Canada for allegedly prioritizing profits over fair compensation for employees, citing the airline’s substantial earnings in recent years. Despite reporting operating revenues exceeding $22 billion in 2024 and a net income of $1.7 billion, Air Canada has not disclosed specific details regarding compensation negotiations. The airline previously defended its compensation model, claiming it aligns with industry standards practiced by most global carriers.
