The government of Alberta revealed plans on Monday to introduce “Canadian citizenship markers” on driver’s licences and identification cards, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in Canada. Premier Danielle Smith shared that the implementation of this change is scheduled for late 2026, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and convenience for residents.
The inclusion of citizenship details on driver’s licences aims to streamline the process for Albertans seeking access to various services such as student aid, health benefits, and disability assistance. Premier Smith highlighted that this modification will enable individuals to easily verify both their identity and citizenship using a single document, while also emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democracy by enhancing the security and integrity of electoral processes.
Notably, individuals who are permanent residents or non-citizens residing in Alberta will not have a citizenship marker displayed on their identification cards. The province will require proof of citizenship or immigration status during driver’s licence applications or renewals. Concurrently, driver’s licences incorporating Alberta health-care card information will be introduced, offering additional security measures to protect health-care numbers.
Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally underscored the significance of these changes, describing them as part of a comprehensive overhaul of Alberta’s driver’s licence and identification card system. The redesign aims to enhance the security, convenience, and functionality of these documents. Nally assured that the inclusion of citizenship markers will not incur extra costs for applicants, with the marker expected to feature a simple “CAN code” on the cards.
Throughout the announcement, it was emphasized that consultations with the federal government were conducted to ensure the necessity and effectiveness of the proposed changes.
