“Amazon Cloud Outage Impacts Global Internet Services”

-

Amazon has announced the resolution of a significant outage on its cloud computing service by Monday evening, following a disruption that affected internet services worldwide. The outage, lasting approximately three hours from the early morning, impacted a wide array of online services including social media, gaming platforms, food delivery, streaming services, and financial platforms. Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported a gradual recovery starting at 6 p.m. ET, bringing services back to normal operations.

As a key unit of Amazon providing computing power and digital services on demand, AWS serves various entities such as companies, governments, and individuals. Any disruptions to AWS servers can lead to outages across websites and platforms relying on its cloud infrastructure. The outage on Monday affected social media apps like Snapchat and Reddit, causing disruptions to businesses globally.

The root cause of the issue was identified as an internal subsystem responsible for monitoring the network load balancers. The recovery process was ongoing as of 5:48 p.m. ET, with most issues stemming from the US-EAST-1 Region. The outage prompted over 13 million reports from users on Downdetector by 2:20 p.m. ET, with a significant number of reports originating from Canada.

Various services and businesses were impacted by the outage, including Ticketmaster, Snapchat, Pinterest, Amazon’s shopping website, Prime Video service, Alexa chatbot, Toronto Blue Jays, Wealthsimple, Perplexity, Coinbase, Robinhood, Slack, Trint, Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, Venmo, Chime, Lyft, Signal, Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, and BT. The incident underscored the crucial role AWS plays in the internet infrastructure, affecting billions of users and emphasizing the interconnectivity of digital services.

AWS, along with Google and Microsoft, dominates about 63% of the cloud infrastructure market. The outage highlighted the dependence on a few global cloud providers for everyday digital services and the potential impact of a single glitch on business operations and daily life. Experts stressed the complexity of technology underlying digital services and the need for diversified infrastructure to mitigate such widespread disruptions.

The AWS outage, the first major internet disruption since last year’s CrowdStrike malfunction, raised concerns about the vulnerability of the digital ecosystem to such incidents. While there were no signs of a cyberattack behind the outage, the scale of disruption fueled speculation in the cybersecurity community. As technology becomes an integral part of daily life, ensuring the resilience and redundancy of digital infrastructure is crucial to preventing widespread disruptions.
