Amazon has alerted certain Fire TV and Echo users that one of its smart products, the Fire TV Blaster, will soon be discontinued. The device will cease functioning “in the coming weeks.” Initially, the Fire TV Blaster provided hands-free voice controls for home theaters when paired with a Fire TV Stick or smart speaker.
Upon installation, the Fire TV Blaster allowed users to command soundbars, adjust volume, and change channels on set-top boxes through Alexa voice prompts.
The Fire TV Blaster was removed from the market a year ago due to complex setup issues and unfavorable reviews. Amazon introduced the Fire TV Cube, offering similar functionalities in a more user-friendly manner.
Amazon stated that the Fire TV Blaster served its purpose during a transitional phase in the smart home industry. However, advancements in technology and the evolution of other Fire TV products rendered a standalone IR blaster unnecessary.
Current Fire TV Blaster owners have been informed that the device will permanently cease operations. U.S. owners have the option to exchange it for a Fire TV Cube at a discounted price, while UK customers will receive a £34.99 gift card automatically credited to their accounts.
In an email to customers who purchased the Fire TV Blaster, Amazon confirmed the discontinuation of support, leading to the device’s cessation of functioning in the near future.
Additionally, Amazon is offering discounts on the Fire TV Cube and gift cards while also providing free recycling for old Fire TV Blasters. Users only need to print a shipping label and return the device.
