“American Airlines Introduces Gate Tech to Curb Boarding Chaos”

-

Passengers often exhibit poor behavior at airport boarding gates, disregarding assigned zones and causing chaos. American Airlines recently introduced gate technology to prevent early boarding attempts with loud alerts. Etiquette expert Nick Leighton believes this can deter line-cutting but acknowledges airlines profit from discomfort, encouraging upgrades and early boarding fees. Leighton, co-host of the podcast “Were You Raised By Wolves?” discussed air travel etiquette with Matt Galloway on The Current, highlighting the clash of diverse etiquette norms among passengers due to varying backgrounds and stressors during flights.

Regarding reclining seats, Leighton advises against it unless necessary, considering factors like tall passengers or meal service. He emphasizes the importance of using headphones in public spaces, except for health and safety reasons. Bringing smelly foods on planes is discouraged, as it invades others’ space. Leighton also suggests keeping socks on during flights for hygiene reasons.

Maintaining a sense of humor and acknowledging the less glamorous nature of modern air travel can help passengers navigate uncomfortable situations. Understanding the presence of fellow travelers and acting considerately towards them is essential for a smoother flying experience.
