Aston Villa transfer stance on Morgan Rogers as Chelsea eye summer move

Must read

Aston Villa are likely to do what they can to resist transfer interest in Morgan Rogers from Chelsea and elsewhere this summer, with the attacking midfielder viewed as an integral part of their future plans.

Rogers, 22, has handled the step up to the Premier League with aplomb since moving to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in January 2024. He has 14 goals and 13 assists to his name this season and even won his first senior England cap late last year after thriving in Unai Emery’s set-up.

Such form has not gone unnoticed and it’s understood that the Premier League’s top three – plus Chelsea – have all been keeping an eye on the former Manchester City starlet’s progress.

But as outlined by The Independent, Villa would be loathe to lose the youngster after watching Rogers establish himself as a vital cog in Emery’s squad as the Midlands outfit push to qualify for the Champions League again.

The Blues have been linked with a host of players ahead of the upcoming transfer window and have not been shy in splashing the cash under BlueCo. It’s said that Chelsea would like to add more goals and creativity to their squad, hence their interest in Rogers. He joined Villa for just £15million after half a campaign with Middlesbrough.

While Rogers is beginning to attract admiring glances from elsewhere, Villa themselves have begun to re-establish themselves among the Premier League’s elite under Emery, who has worked wonders since replacing Steven Gerrard in late 2023.

After qualifying for the Champions League last season, Villa reached the quarter-finals before succumbing to Paris Saint-Germain. They are currently seventh in the Premier League, three points off the top five with four games remaining.

Rogers was lauded by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in the season after dazzling on the biggest stage this season. The former Premier League champions gave Rogers the green light to move on without making a single first-team appearance for City.

“He was in the second team, and trained sometimes with us, and we could see something there,’ Guardiola said. “But the impact he’s had in Villa, what a player, we had an exceptional player here, absolutely.”
