Auger-Aliassime Advances to European Open Quarterfinals

-

Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Open tennis tournament in Brussels after a hard-fought victory against Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Auger-Aliassime, the second seed in the tournament, dominated with 22 aces and had 14 opportunities to break Dzumhur’s serve. Despite this, Dzumhur managed to save 13 break points and capitalized on both of his chances.

In a closely contested match, Auger-Aliassime had a double-break point in the crucial 10th game of the third set but Dzumhur fought back to save three match points and level the set at 5-5. Dzumhur then took a 4-3 lead in the deciding tiebreak before Auger-Aliassime rallied to win four of the next five points.

The 25-year-old Auger-Aliassime, currently ranked 13th in the world, is set to face American qualifier Eliot Spizzirri in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 hardcourt event. This match marks the second meeting between Auger-Aliassime and Dzumhur at the ATP Tour level, with their previous encounter in 2020 resulting in a victory for Auger-Aliassime at Montpellier, France.
