“B.C. Wildfire Threatens Popular Lake Campers”

-

Campers seeking to set up camp at a popular lake in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley may need to make alternative arrangements due to an uncontrollable wildfire first noticed on Tuesday evening. The Bear Creek fire, situated near Harrison Lake, spans 65 hectares as of 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Emergency responders are advising the public to avoid Harrison Lake, and fire information officer Julia Caranci mentioned that some nearby campers were already instructed to vacate the area for their safety. Caranci informed CBC News that road closures would likely be recommended before the upcoming long weekend to ensure public safety and support responders.

Specific details regarding road closures will be communicated as they occur, and firefighters are urging people to steer clear of the region entirely and explore other recreational options ahead of the B.C. Day long weekend. Caranci acknowledged the inconvenience this may cause but emphasized the importance of avoiding the active wildfire area.

The fire is suspected to be human-caused, a classification encompassing all non-lightning-induced fires. Caranci highlighted the exceptionally dry conditions in B.C.’s South Coast in recent weeks, posing challenges for firefighting efforts. While some rainfall is anticipated, it is not expected to be substantial in the short-term forecast.

Campfires are currently prohibited in a significant portion of the South Coast, with larger Category 2 and Category 3 fires, including extensive stubble fires and large burn piles, banned across British Columbia. In light of these restrictions and the ongoing wildfire risks, individuals are urged to adhere to safety guidelines and exercise caution.

Additionally, an update from the B.C. Wildfire Service revealed that a blaze south of Lytton, B.C., known as the Cantilever Bar wildfire, has expanded significantly and remains uncontained. Evacuation alerts have been issued for several properties in the area, prompting heightened vigilance and preparedness from residents and authorities alike.
