Blue Jays’ Shapiro Eager to Extend Stay

-

Blue Jays’ president Mark Shapiro refrained from discussing ongoing contract extension negotiations on Tuesday but expressed his desire to continue leading the team. He mentioned that the team’s ownership is also keen on retaining him in his role. Shapiro, who is also the chief executive officer, is currently in the final year of his contract.

During a pre-game press briefing, Shapiro emphasized his commitment to the team and highlighted his long tenures in both Cleveland and Toronto, citing his appreciation for the people he works with, the city, and the country. At 58 years old, Shapiro joined the Blue Jays in 2015 and signed a five-year extension in January 2021.

In a rare mid-season media interaction lasting about 20 minutes, Shapiro faced inquiries regarding discussions with Rogers Communications, the team’s owner, about a possible contract renewal. While he did not provide specific details, Shapiro reiterated his desire to stay with the Blue Jays and mentioned the positive reception from top executives Edward Rogers and Tony Staffieri.

The Blue Jays have experienced a remarkable turnaround from finishing last in the American League East division the previous season to leading the AL with a record of 69-50 as they faced the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
