Jon Thaxton has expressed his admiration for Ricky Hatton following the unfortunate news of the British boxing icon’s passing at his residence. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the somber incident after responding to a call at Hatton’s home in Hyde.

According to a spokesperson from the authorities, they were alerted by a member of the public to visit Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, where they discovered the body of a 46-year-old man. The police stated that there are currently no suspicions of foul play involved.

In the aftermath of the sad event, various close acquaintances and family members of Hatton, including Thaxton, have shared heartfelt tributes to the legendary boxer known as ‘the Hitman’. Thaxton reminisced about his challenging showdown with Hatton at the Wembley Conference Centre in 2000, where he defied expectations and battled fiercely for the vacant British light-welterweight title.

Reflecting on their bout on BBC Radio Norfolk, Thaxton praised Hatton as the people’s champion and emphasized the mutual respect that developed between them over the years. Despite their intense fight, Thaxton acknowledged Hatton’s genuine character and the lasting impact their match had on both of their careers.

As a former champion in the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions, Hatton faced formidable opponents throughout his career, with notable matches against boxing greats like Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. However, Thaxton’s promoter, Neil Featherby, believes that Thaxton posed the toughest challenge to Hatton in the ring.

Featherby recalled how Hatton himself acknowledged Thaxton as his most formidable adversary, highlighting the resilience displayed during their memorable encounter. Thaxton also enjoyed a successful boxing career, securing the WBF lightweight title in 2005 before retiring with a respectable record.

Additionally, Hatton’s family released a poignant tribute to honor his memory, describing him as not just a world champion but a beloved son, father, grandfather, and friend to many. They emphasized Hatton’s enduring legacy as a champion both inside and outside the ring, underscoring his humility, fighting spirit, and unwavering love for the sport.

The family expressed their profound loss and gratitude for the overwhelming support received, requesting privacy as they cope with their grief. They affirmed their commitment to preserving Hatton’s legacy and cherished memories, thanking fans and the boxing community for their enduring love and respect for the late legend.
