A tragic incident occurred at a renowned Brazilian restaurant where a cook lost her life after a floor collapsed, trapping her and five others in the rubble. The victim, Suênia Maria Tomé Bezerra, aged 51, was working at Jamile restaurant in Sao Paulo when the accident took place. Despite the efforts of paramedics, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The restaurant, owned by chef Henrique Fogaca of ‘Masterchef’ fame, is now under investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure.
Suênia, originally from Paraiba, had been working at the restaurant for three years after moving to Sao Paulo to support her son’s medical education. Her brother, who also works at the restaurant, was not present during the collapse. Located in the Bixiga neighborhood, an area historically associated with Italian immigrants, Jamile occupies three floors. In response to the tragedy, Chef Fogaca expressed his condolences and emphasized his support for the victims and their families.
Initially suspected to be caused by a gas leak, investigations have ruled out this possibility. The gas distributor in the area, Comgás, shut off the gas supply as a precautionary measure. They have stated that there is no evident link between the gas and the collapse, expressing regret over the incident and offering assistance in the investigative process.
The community mourns the loss of Suênia, a beloved member of the restaurant staff, whose memory will be cherished by those who knew her. The incident has prompted a thorough examination of building safety and regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
