“Calgary Flames to Part Ways with Dillon Dube After Acquittal”

-

The Calgary Flames have decided against re-signing forward Dillon Dube, who was recently acquitted of sexual assault charges along with four other hockey players. Flames general manager Craig Conroy stated on Wednesday that, currently, there are no plans to bring Dube back to the team, suggesting that Dube may benefit from a fresh start.

Dube, who captained the Canadian junior team in 2018 and was a second-round pick by the Flames in 2016, had a notable career with Calgary, scoring 57 goals and tallying 70 assists in 325 games over six seasons. He took a leave of absence from the Flames in January 2024 to focus on his mental health.

Dube, along with Carter Hart, Cal Foote, Michael McLeod, and Alex Formenton, faced sexual assault charges in January 2024. Dube’s contract with the Flames expired after the charges were laid. Following an eight-week trial, an Ontario Superior Court justice acquitted the players, and the Crown announced it would not appeal the decision.

The NHL has since reinstated the players, allowing them to sign contracts starting October 15 and participate in games from December 1 onwards.
