Canada has criticized Israel’s recent ground offensive in Gaza City, calling it “horrific” and expressing concern that it could hinder the release of hostages still held by Hamas. Israel has intensified its bombing of the Gaza Strip, targeting the former most populated city in the region to prevent further Hamas attacks.

The international community has widely condemned the escalation, with the United Nations labeling Israel’s actions as potentially genocidal. Global Affairs Canada urged Israel to adhere to international law, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages.

In response, Israeli Ambassador to Canada Iddo Moed defended his country’s actions, stating that Israel is complying with international conventions and highlighting the harsh conditions in which Israeli hostages are held by Hamas. Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed plans to recognize Palestinian statehood, while the debate on the matter in the Canadian Parliament remains pending.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed Canada’s intent to recognize the state of Palestine, contingent on reforms and elections in the West Bank excluding Hamas participation. Opposition leaders have not issued statements on the Israel-Hamas conflict, with doubts raised about Canada’s commitment to affirming Palestinian statehood.

A UN commission accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, a claim rejected by Israel. Activists have urged Ottawa to acknowledge the genocide and impose stronger measures against Israel. Justice Minister Sean Fraser emphasized the importance of a legal process to determine genocide allegations, highlighting the need for evidence-based submissions.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand convened Arab ambassadors to discuss ceasefire efforts in Gaza. Anand’s evaluation of the relationship with Israel following recent events has drawn attention, especially after Israel’s strike on Qatar during ceasefire negotiations. Calls for sanctions on Israel have emerged, echoing the European Union’s plans to impose tariffs on Israeli goods.

In a Toronto conference, Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin lamented the political polarization surrounding the conflict, emphasizing the challenge of fostering dialogue and understanding. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to spark international concern and calls for diplomatic resolution.
