The new Minister of Trade in Ottawa is focused on securing trade agreements in regions such as South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, aiming to encourage Canadian businesses to utilize the existing trade agreements effectively.
Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s top trade representative, emphasized the importance of expanding market access and fostering relationships with reliable trading partners. While Prime Minister Mark Carney delegated responsibility for Canada-U.S. trade to Dominic LeBlanc, Sidhu’s focus lies on diversifying trade partnerships beyond the U.S.
Export Development Canada reported that Canada currently has 15 free trade agreements with 51 countries, granting Canadian exporters preferential access to a vast consumer base of over 1.5 billion people. Despite this, Sidhu believes Canadian companies can further explore opportunities outside the U.S., especially amidst ongoing tariff disputes with Washington.
With a background encompassing various facets of Global Affairs Canada, including aid, trade, and diplomacy, Sidhu’s experience includes representing Canada at trade events in Southeast Asia and security forums in the Caribbean. He plans to engage in trade discussions with Brazil, particularly regarding trade talks that began in 2018 between Canada and the Mercosur trade bloc.
In contrast to the previous approach of large trade missions, Sidhu aims to lead smaller delegations focused on specific sectors during his international trips. This targeted strategy intends to ensure that businesses receive personalized attention and meaningful engagements in various regions, from South America to Europe and Africa.
Sidhu also highlighted the potential for sector-specific agreements with other countries as a flexible alternative to comprehensive trade deals. While Canada had previously explored limited sector-focused agreements with India, talks were halted in 2023 following security concerns. Sidhu emphasized the importance of step-by-step progress and indicated that the re-establishment of high commissioners between Canada and India would facilitate future trade discussions.
As Canada navigates trade dynamics with China and the U.K., Sidhu emphasized the need for stability in trade relationships and innovative approaches to expanding market access. Despite challenges, he remains optimistic about enhancing trade opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers through strategic partnerships and effective utilization of resources.
