Canada’s strategy for preparing its women’s hockey team for the 2026 Olympics will see significant changes due to the establishment of a women’s professional league. Instead of assembling in Calgary ahead of the Winter Games as usual, the Canadian women will now have training sessions in Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, aligning with the schedule of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).
Captain of the Canadian team, Marie-Philip Poulin, expressed enthusiasm for this new approach, emphasizing the excitement surrounding the PWHL. The defense of the Olympic gold medal will commence on February 5 against Finland in Milan, Italy. The recent Hockey Canada orientation camp in Calgary saw 27 out of 30 invited women playing in the PWHL, which is entering its third season.
In previous years, centralization in Calgary provided a conducive environment for training and competition when the women’s leagues did not offer sufficient ice time and quality games. The expansion of the PWHL to eight teams this season will provide more than 30 regular-season games along with salaries and benefits, showcasing top players like Hilary Knight, Taylor Heise, Michelle Karvinen, Alina Mueller, and Tereza Vanisova.
The PWHL’s role in Olympic preparation has now been solidified by offering high-stakes games and daily training, mirroring the support the NHL provides for male players. This setup fosters a competitive atmosphere among players, pushing each other to excel and be fully prepared for the Olympics. The league has also become a platform for emerging talents, as seen with players like Daryl Watts and Hannah Miller making their mark on the international stage.
The increased competition within the PWHL and the exposure it provides are raising the profile of women’s hockey, with players gaining recognition at the highest level. The upcoming Rivalry Series between Canada and the U.S. in November will further test the team’s readiness for the Olympics. Hockey Canada’s commitment to investing in this preparation is evident, setting a strong foundation for success in the upcoming games.
