Canadian Army Brigade Leader Resigns Amid Facebook Scandal

-

The leader of a Canadian Army brigade has stepped down following a controversy involving a disbanded Facebook group linked to an Ottawa-based reserve unit. Col. James McKay, who commanded the 33 Canadian Brigade Group, resigned after revelations emerged about the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own) posting offensive content. Allegations include members sharing antisemitic, misogynistic, homophobic, and racist remarks, as well as explicit images on the “Blue Hackle Mafia” page, which has since been removed.

Lt.-Col. Ryan Hendy, the commander of the Cameron Highlanders, has been temporarily relieved of duty while military police and the army conduct investigations. McKay, who was Hendy’s superior, acknowledged his shortcomings in handling the Facebook group issue, stating that his multiple responsibilities hindered his decision-making ability. The Department of National Defence confirmed McKay’s resignation on July 21, emphasizing the importance of accountability and maintaining a culture that aligns with Canadian expectations.

Uncertainty remains regarding McKay’s future in the military and his interim replacement. McKay expressed concern that the controversy has diverted attention from the brigade’s primary focus on training soldiers and teams. Previous concerns about the Facebook group’s content, which included derogatory comments targeting women and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, were raised internally last year. Despite initial investigations yielding no service offense, recent screenshots of the group prompted renewed scrutiny and disciplinary actions within the army.

The military police have launched a new investigation following media inquiries, with calls for a thorough examination of their handling of social issues within the military. Efforts to address hateful conduct online have been reinforced following past incidents involving extremist associations and racist behavior. The military is urged to reevaluate its mechanisms for combating racism and hateful conduct within its ranks to ensure a more inclusive and accountable environment.
