Canadian cyclist Derek Gee is currently entangled in a legal battle with the Israel-Premier Tech team, facing potential damages exceeding $48.6 million as he seeks to terminate his contract. Despite the looming financial threat, Gee is resolute in his decision to sever ties with the team, citing his inability to continue racing under the existing circumstances.
In a statement shared on social media, the 28-year-old athlete from Ottawa emphasized that his contract termination was justified, highlighting irreconcilable differences with the team principal and profound concerns regarding his safety and personal values while racing. Israel-Premier Tech, in response to inquiries about Gee’s stance, stated that the case is currently under review by the UCI Arbitral Board, refraining from further comments.
The Israel-Premier Tech team has recently faced backlash and protests, with a Montreal-based human rights group urging Mayor Valerie Plante to exclude the team from a cycling event due to ongoing conflicts in Gaza. Amid security concerns, the team withdrew from several races in Italy and had its invitation to participate in the Giro dell’Emilia rescinded by organizers. As a result, the team announced plans to rebrand and distance itself from its Israeli identity, with co-owner Sylvan Adams transitioning to a different role within the organization.
Gee’s legal representatives have contested the validity of his contract termination, asserting that the dispute is now in the hands of regulatory bodies and legal experts. Gee refuted any claims of financial motivation behind his actions, expressing his belief in upholding his rights as a professional and individual. The team, formerly known as the Cycling Academy team before rebranding as Israel-Premier Tech, boasts strong ties to Canada, with Canadian riders and executives playing significant roles within the organization.
Having joined the WorldTour squad in 2022 after rising through the team’s academy ranks, Gee remains steadfast in his decision to part ways with Israel-Premier Tech, as the cycling world closely monitors the unfolding legal proceedings surrounding this contentious contract termination.
