-

The Canadian short track speed skating team achieved remarkable success on the first day of the second World Tour stop in Montreal, securing four gold medals. Local favorite William Dandjinou stood out with two individual victories, claiming his second win of the season in the men’s 500 meters with a time of 41.126 seconds at Maurice Richard Arena. Dandjinou took the lead after a restart following a false start by Dutch competitor Jens Van’T Wout and maintained it to the finish line.

In another event, Dandjinou, the defending men’s overall champion, clinched a gold medal in the 1,500 meters with a time of 2:13.217. Meanwhile, Courtney Sarault from Moncton, N.B., continued her winning streak by securing another gold in the women’s 1,000 meters. The 25-year-old controlled the race pace and finished ahead of South Korea’s Choi Min-jeong and Dutch skater Xandra Velzeboer.

Sarault also contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 3,000 meters relay, along with Quebec skaters Kim Boutin, Danaé Blais, and Florence Brunelle. The Canadian team, known as the Ice Maples, redeemed themselves with a gold medal in this event, finishing in 4:07.341. This victory was particularly sweet after a disappointing bronze medal performance in the previous weekend’s competition.

The action-packed day in Montreal showcased the outstanding performances of the Canadian athletes, setting the stage for more thrilling competitions in the upcoming World Tour stops in Poland and the Netherlands. The world championships are also scheduled to take place in Montreal in March following the Olympics. Fans can catch live coverage of the medal rounds on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
