Canadian shot put athlete Sarah Mitton had her Diamond League Final victory revoked on Wednesday after a successful challenge to her winning throw. Originally thought to have thrown 20.67 meters, Mitton was later disqualified as judges found she had stepped out of the throwing circle before the shot landed. This decision pushed her down to third place in the competition held in Switzerland.
Jessica Schilder from the Netherlands claimed the top spot with a throw of 20.26 meters, followed by American athlete Chase Jackson in second place with 20.08 meters. The protest against Mitton’s throw was lodged within the permitted 30-minute time frame, leading to the adjustment in the final standings.
Schilder will officially receive the Diamond League Trophy at Letizgrund Stadium. Mitton, now focusing on the upcoming World Athletics Championships from September 13 to 21, previously won a silver medal at the 2023 event in Budapest.
In a separate event, Mondo Duplantis, the pole vault world record holder, secured his fifth consecutive Diamond League pole vault title. Katie Moon also clinched the women’s title, setting the stage for her world championship defense in Tokyo. Duplantis cleared six meters on his fifth attempt, ultimately winning on countback as neither he nor Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis surpassed 6.10 meters.
Moon triumphed with a 4.82-meter clearance, outperforming American competitor Sandi Morris. On the men’s side, Joe Kovacs won the shot put event with a throw of 22.46 meters, while Simon Ehammer delighted the local fans by claiming victory in the men’s long jump.
The second day of the Diamond League Final will commence on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET, with live streaming available on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
