Chappell Roan’s Teaser for “The Subway” Features Saskatchewan Vibes

-

In a sneak peek of her upcoming song, Chappell Roan is featured with her distinctive red hair blowing in the wind against the backdrop of a blue Prairie sky from the window of a moving van. In the teaser, she sings that if she still misses her ex after four months, she will “move to Saskatchewan.” The video starts with a Saskatchewan license plate, showcasing canola fields and grain bins, and ends as the van passes the “Welcome to Saskatchewan: Land of Living Skies” sign at the border.

Some viewers speculated whether Roan actually visited the province to film the teaser for her single “The Subway.” However, it was revealed that the red hair was actually a wig, as confirmed by Jill Dukart from Regina-based marketing agency Captive Media, which produced the teaser.

Roan has been referencing Saskatchewan for over a year during her live performances of “The Subway.” The official single was released on Thursday, accompanied by a music video the following morning. The teaser video, rich with Saskatchewan imagery, was released last week, generating heightened interest in the province, especially among local fans.

Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski expressed his excitement about the mention, noting that it’s rare for a Grammy-winning artist to give Saskatchewan a shoutout in their lyrics. The making of the teaser video was described as a whirlwind experience by Dukart, who received a call from Universal Music Group Canada to assist one of their artists, Chappell Roan.

The team at Captive Media worked diligently to showcase Saskatchewan in the footage, going beyond the initial requirements set by the music label. Despite a tight timeline, they utilized a drone for aerial shots and put extra effort into capturing the essence of the province.

Due to time constraints, the team had to improvise with the red wig, sourcing it from a local wig store and having a worker from the rental company don it in place of Roan. Roan, in an interview from 2024, expressed her intention to visit Saskatchewan in person to perform for her fans after singing about the province in her song.

In “The Subway,” Roan reflects on a past lover with distinct features, lamenting their memory. The song has been well-received, with Dukart mentioning that it has been on repeat in their office. The collaboration between Roan and Saskatchewan has sparked excitement and anticipation among fans and local residents alike.
