Curling Champion Brad Gushue Announces Retirement

Newfoundland and Labrador’s renowned curler Brad Gushue, a decorated athlete with two Olympic medals and numerous national men’s curling championships, has announced his decision to retire from competitive curling at the conclusion of the upcoming season. Gushue shared the news through a video posted on social media, expressing his intention to focus more on family time and having accomplished the athletic goals he had set for himself.

In his announcement, Gushue reflected on feeling fortunate to have achieved his aspirations, giving him the confidence to retire without any lingering regrets or unmet challenges. He expressed enthusiasm for remaining involved in the curling community and exploring new opportunities beyond the rink, while expressing gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support throughout his illustrious career.

At 45 years old, Gushue boasts an impressive record, having secured six Brier championships and participated in 21 Briers representing Team Newfoundland and Labrador, Team Canada, and as part of a wild card team. Additionally, he has clinched five medals at the World Men’s Curling Championship and amassed 15 Grand Slam victories. Notably, Gushue made history by capturing Olympic Gold in 2006 at Turin and Bronze in 2022 in Beijing.

Currently leading a team that includes Geoff Walker, Brendan Bottcher, and Mark Nichols, Gushue’s final appearance at the Brier will take place in St. John’s, commencing on February 27. The team is scheduled to address the media on Thursday at 2 p.m. NT to discuss the retirement announcement and future plans outside of competitive curling.
