Veteran journalist David Common, currently the host of “Metro Morning” on radio, has been announced as the replacement for Heather Hiscox on “CBC Morning Live,” the public broadcaster revealed on Thursday. This announcement coincides with Hiscox’s final broadcast after twenty years in the hosting role, concluding her Morning Live tour across Canada.
In a recent interview, Common shared his vision for the show, aiming to tackle the evolving television landscape and combat the rising sense of disinterest and disillusionment towards news. He emphasized the importance of maintaining journalistic integrity while also injecting some levity into the program to keep viewers engaged and informed without feeling overwhelmed.
Originally from Winnipeg, Common’s career trajectory took an unexpected turn when he met Peter Mansbridge during his teenage years, shifting his aspirations from nursing to journalism. He kickstarted his journalism journey at CBC’s London bureau in 1999, embarking on a diverse range of assignments across different cities and countries, eventually leading him to prominent hosting roles like “World Report” on CBC Radio and “Metro Morning.”
Common acknowledged the challenges ahead as he transitions to his new role, expressing excitement about the prospect of returning to video journalism. He highlighted the ongoing transformations within CBC and the broader media landscape, underlining the importance of adapting to reach audiences through various platforms beyond traditional television.
Mark Ross, the managing editor of CBC News Network, emphasized the evolution of “Morning Live,” noting the show’s commitment to live news coverage while incorporating Common’s strengths in audience engagement and a more relaxed presentation style. The goal is to infuse the program with a personal and authentic touch to resonate with viewers.
Hiscox and her team, known for their exceptional work on CBC News Network’s flagship morning program, received accolades and awards, including Canadian Screen Awards for best national news anchor and best morning show. Their achievements also extended to recognition from the Radio Television Digital News Association for outstanding breaking news coverage and Hiscox’s receipt of a National Lifetime Achievement Award.
Common is set to conclude his tenure on “Metro Morning” on January 16, 2026, before transitioning to his full-time hosting duties on “Morning Live” starting on February 2. In the interim, interim anchors will step in to host “Morning Live” until Common assumes his new role, while the search for the next host of “Metro Morning” continues.
