“David Lametti Named Canada’s UN Representative”

-

Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially appointed David Lametti as Canada’s next representative to the United Nations. Carney stated that the new Canadian government aims to enhance and broaden its global partnerships, entrusting capable and principled leaders to advocate for Canada’s strengths in a swiftly changing world.

Initial news of Lametti’s possible move from the Prime Minister’s Office to a diplomatic position was reported by CBC News on Wednesday. Lametti, a former justice minister under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from 2019 to 2023, had recently stepped down from Parliament in 2024. He had been working as Carney’s chief aide, and both had previously played hockey together at the University of Oxford.

Lametti is set to take over from Bob Rae, Canada’s current UN envoy, on November 17. Rae extended congratulations to Lametti through a social media post, mentioning his prior conversation with Carney during the summer about vacating his role.

In addition to Lametti’s appointment, Carney also revealed Vera Alexander as the upcoming Canadian ambassador to Germany. Alexander, a seasoned bureaucrat, will succeed the late John Horgan in this position.
