“Despite Fire Ban, St. John’s Firefighters Respond to Bonfires”

-

Despite a current provincewide fire ban in effect in Newfoundland and Labrador and the presence of three active wildfires, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department is still being called to respond to bonfires.

Forestry Minister Lisa Dempster announced the provincewide fire ban on Tuesday, which is set to remain in place for at least the next month. Premier John Hogan expressed disappointment that on the day the ban was initiated, firefighters had to attend to three separate bonfires.

The following day, firefighters were once again dispatched to handle five additional bonfires. Platoon Chief Ed Sears expressed deep frustration and bewilderment at this ongoing situation. Sears emphasized the irresponsible behavior of individuals who continue to ignore the seriousness of the ban by engaging in backyard fires.

Sears stressed the need for penalties to be enforced, highlighting the abnormal fire conditions and the importance of heeding the warnings issued by authorities. He stated that resources are stretched thin due to their focus on existing fires.

Despite the awareness of the provincewide fire ban, Sears noted a deliberate choice by some individuals to proceed with bonfires. He expressed concern that people seem indifferent to the potential consequences, showing a lack of consideration for their neighbors and surroundings.

With no rainfall expected in the near future and dry conditions prevailing, Sears warned of a possible escalation in the number of fires. Given the proximity of St. John’s to trees and vegetation, a fire could swiftly spread in such conditions.

Sears emphasized the critical need to adhere to the directives provided and refrain from any form of fire activity. He referred to a previous incident in July where a fire in the Quidi Vidi neighborhood caused significant damage due to inaccessibility for firefighters.

Premier Hogan indicated plans to increase fines for violating the fire ban, considering the current penalties inadequate. Sears supported this move, emphasizing the importance of enforcing consequences for those disregarding the ban.

Sears reiterated the gravity of the situation and the heightened vigilance regarding fire risks, stating that individuals attempting to have fires will face consequences.
