The leader of a ruthless and violent drug cartel has been arrested after a disturbing discovery was made in the form of bags filled with human remains.
The grisly find was reported at around 8am on Saturday morning when authorities were told of human remains found scattered in the La Laja neighbourhood of Acapulco, Mexico. Emergency services descended on the scene, including the National Guard, State Police, the Navy and forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s office who removed the remains and took them to a Forensic Medical Service. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was found dismembered – headless with his arms and legs chopped up. A cardboard sign was reportedly found next to the remains in the neighbourhood in Acapulco, said to have been signed by a criminal organisation.
It comes as authorities in the region confirmed that Eduardo López Torres, known as ‘El Chambitas’, who had been identified as an alleged leader of a cell of the Acapulco Independent Cartel (CIDA), was captured. The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Guerrero reported on Saturday that the Anti-Extortion Unit, working with the Ministry of National Defense, Navy, National Guard, and others, carried out an arrest warrant against Eduardo ‘N’.
The court order was granted for his suspected part in aggravated extortion in Acapulco. It has been reported that on March 25 this year, the leader of a criminal gang operating in Acapulco, along with others, allegedly demanded five thousands pesos (£192) from a merchant at the Acapulco Central de Abasto market, to allow him to work threatening to burn down his business if he did not pay up.
State authorities have claimed that their intelligence depicted ‘El Chambitas’ as a source of violence in the area and a person linked to numerous extortion activities. It comes amid a spike in violent crime in the Guerreo region.
Another decapitated body was found off the Acapulco-Pinotepa Nacional federal highway in the Cuajinicuilapa municipality. The victim was found by a group of passers-by who immediately notified authorities in the nearby town of El Terrero.
The victim was identified as a male, believed to be originally from San Nicolás. He was wearing beige Bermuda shorts, and his head was wrapped in a black t-shirt while his feet were bound with chains.
However, his full identity has not yet been confirmed, so the victim was taken to the Security and Investigation Department as the Guerrero Prosecutor’s office investigates the crime. Saturday’s crimes bring the total of murders in the Guerrero region to 57 in a span of just two weeks, from April 14 to 25, according to data from the National Security Council.
