Dump Discovery: Woman Finds Treasure, Embraces Role

-

Meg Whitton, residing in Simcoe County, had a unique experience at a local dump in southern Ontario. While discarding an old broom, she stumbled upon two weathered Cedar Muskoka chairs amidst a pile of broken wood. Despite the act being against the rules, she decided to rescue the chairs and take them home for her backyard. This unexpected find led her to develop a fondness for the dump.

Intrigued by the items people discarded, Meg shared her treasure on Twitter, only to discover that the chairs had been dropped off earlier that day by a stranger. With a few minor repairs, the chairs became a cherished addition to her outdoor space. This serendipitous event sparked Meg’s interest in the dump, eventually leading her to take on a part-time job there.

Working at the transfer station, Meg assisted visitors in sorting their items for proper disposal. She was surprised by people’s willingness to comply once they understood the sorting process. Beyond directing waste, Meg found herself listening to personal stories behind the discarded items, ranging from faulty coasters to sentimental belongings of deceased loved ones.

Witnessing the disposal of almost-new items and unsellable donations at the dump, Meg encountered conflicting emotions. She reflected on her own contributions to charity and the guilt associated with discarding certain items. Despite efforts to find a new home for a toy fire engine her children had outgrown, Meg faced challenges due to changing donation policies and lack of interest from potential recipients.

As she contemplates discarding the toy, Meg reflects on the consumerist culture that often leads to unnecessary purchases and subsequent disposal. The experience at the dump serves as a poignant reminder of the cycle of consumption and disposal in modern society.
