The Edmonton Elks, led by Cody Fajardo, secured their third consecutive victory by defeating the Redblacks 30-20 in Ottawa on Friday night. Fajardo showcased his skills by completing 22 of 28 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown, guiding his team to success despite the Redblacks’ comeback attempt.
Justin Rankin, the Elks running back, also made a significant impact with 14 carries for 36 yards and a crucial touchdown in the fourth quarter. Head coach Mark Kilam praised Rankin for his energy and contribution to the team’s offense.
Despite the Redblacks’ efforts, they struggled to start games with urgency for the fifth consecutive week and fell behind early. Ottawa’s slow starts have been a recurring issue, with only one point scored in the first quarter of their last five games.
The Elks took an early 17-0 lead with a field goal, a Fajardo touchdown, and an 80-yard punt return by Javon Leake before the Redblacks responded. Ottawa’s Dustin Crum, filling in for the injured Dru Brown, showed determination by leading his team to narrow the gap in the second half.
In a critical moment, Fajardo orchestrated a touchdown drive for the Elks, extending their lead to secure the win. Despite Ottawa’s efforts to rally back, they fell short, with Vincent Blanchard sealing the victory for the Elks with a late field goal.
During the game, Ottawa’s Daniel Okpoko suffered an injury and was taken off the field for medical attention. The Redblacks later confirmed that Okpoko was responsive and had movement in all extremities but was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
In other news, Redblacks coach Bob Dyce faced off against his son Trysten, who serves as the Elks’ running backs coach and offensive assistant. The Elks are set to face the Calgary Stampeders next, while the Redblacks will host the B.C. Lions in their upcoming games.
