Eland Cables, a company specializing in supplying electrical cables for major infrastructure projects, has taken the initiative to implement a pay increase for its employees ahead of schedule. This move has been welcomed by the staff, who believe that the extra income will be beneficial, especially as the holiday season approaches.

The Real Living Wage, which is a voluntary pay standard for workers aged 18 and above, is calculated based on the essential costs of living, including food, clothing, and household expenses. Eland Cables has raised the hourly rate by 85p to £13.45 an hour, representing a 6.7% increase, and by 95p to £14.80 an hour in London, a 6.9% rise, exceeding the statutory minimum wage.

While many employers have until May 2026 to implement the higher wage rates, Eland Cables has chosen to introduce the pay boost early. Ben, a 34-year-old father of two from Doncaster and a long-serving employee of the company, expressed his appreciation for the move, highlighting the positive impact it will have on his family’s finances, particularly with the upcoming holiday season.

JS Pelland, the executive director of Eland Cables, emphasized that the decision to implement the Real Living Wage increase early is rooted in principles of fairness, loyalty, and long-term success. He noted that prioritizing fair compensation for employees is integral to the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and well-being strategies.

By treating employees well and fostering a supportive work environment, Eland Cables has achieved an 88% staff retention rate, reduced sickness absences, and boosted productivity. The company’s commitment to internal promotion and career development has further enhanced employee engagement and contributed to its overall success in the industry.
