Elon Musk has come under fire for allegedly neglecting child safety online, according to statements made to Keir Starmer. Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, is urging for the world’s wealthiest individual to be summoned before Members of Parliament after speaking at an event organized by Tommy Robinson, where he warned about impending violence in the UK.
During an interview with Sir Trevor Phillips on Sky News, Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, was questioned about his alleged criminal behavior. Starmer accused Musk of inciting violence and promoting civil unrest while failing to address harmful content like self-harm, grooming, and child exploitation on his platform.
Following Musk’s controversial appearance at the Unite the Kingdom rally, where he made provocative statements, Sir Ed is expected to criticize Musk’s motives for intervening in democracy, suggesting it stems from ego and a disregard for the consequences of his platform’s impact on society, especially children.
The Liberal Democrat leader has called for an investigation by Ofcom into Musk’s platform and personal accountability under the Online Safety Act. The ongoing social media dispute between Sir Ed and Musk escalated when the businessman labeled Sir Ed a “craven coward” in response to accusations of incitement to violence.
In a bid to hold Musk accountable for his actions, the Liberal Democrats plan to introduce a motion upon Parliament’s return to summon Musk before MPs. This rare parliamentary action would require Musk to appear at the House of Commons to face public scrutiny, a power that has not been exercised in decades and was last used in 1957 on a non-MP.
