Actress Sophie Nyweide was found dead at the age of 24, with police investigating the death of the star not ruling out foul play. She was best known for playing the daughter of Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal ’s characters in the 2009 romantic drama Mammoth and in a moving statement, her family paid a heartbreaking tribute to Sophie.
“Sophie was a kind and trusting girl. Often this left her open to being taken advantage of by others. She wrote and drew voraciously, and much of this art depicts the depth she had, and it also represents the pain she suffered. Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas,” they said in a statement.
“Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her, are heartbroken their efforts couldn’t save her from her fate.
“She self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death.
“She repeatedly said she would ‘handle it’ on her own and was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life.”
Autopsy results would reportedly take six to eight weeks but an initial report, obtained by TMZ, showed she was pregnant when she died. Additionally, police have not ruled out foul play.
Shelly, Sophie Nyweide’s mom, told TMZ after her tragic death: “We are very distraught and mourning. All I can say is her time acting was brief but very happy.
“She wasn’t a child star in the least and wasn’t subjected to anything hurtful on those films. She was always safe on those sets. Please let her rest in peace now.”
Her father remembered her as someone “creative, athletic and wise beyond her years.”
The publication said Bennington Police said her the star’s body was found not far from a high school in the town in Vermont in the early hours of the morning on April 14. She was declared dead at the scene.
According to authorities, Sophie’s body was found near a lean-to and nothing has been ruled out in relation to her death.
A man was allegedly with Sophie when she died but he is said to be cooperating with police and isn’t considered to be a suspect or a person of interest.
