If you own an Android device, it’s recommended to ensure you have the latest update from Google installed. Google has recently announced the release of a crucial security patch aimed at fixing a significant issue affecting several new smartphones.
The identified bug impacts specific Dolby audio components and, if present, could potentially enable hackers to execute malicious code through simple audio files.
While Google addressed the problem on its Android devices last month, a broader rollout has now been initiated to make the patch available for all Android phones.
Adam Boynton, Senior Security Strategy Manager EMEIA at Jamf, emphasized the importance of the security bulletin, stating that it addresses a serious flaw discovered in 2025, now resolved at the Android platform level. The vulnerability, known as CVE-2025-54957, involves a flaw in Dolby’s DD+ Unified Decoder, allowing attackers to execute malicious code without user interaction, particularly exploiting audio attachments and voice messages on Android OS.
It is advised to promptly check your phone’s settings and ensure it is fully updated to safeguard personal data. Even though iPhones are not impacted by this particular vulnerability, Apple users are also encouraged to check for updates and install them promptly for enhanced security.
Boynton stressed the significance of regular patching as a fundamental measure to mitigate mobile risks, asserting that whether using Android or iOS, keeping devices updated is the best defense against contemporary mobile threats.
