‘I was Fred West’s solicitor, finding black haired skeleton under patio was only the beginning’

Must read

Fred West’s solicitor will speak chillingly about visiting Cromwell Street and seeing a skeleton retrieved from the ground as part of a new documentary.

In the first clip from a forthcoming Netflix series, West’s solicitor Howard Ogden admits the shock of the scale of the killings, with both he and police originally led to believe there was a single murder.

Fred and Rose West tortured, raped and murdered an unknown number of women in Gloucester between 1967 and 1987.

Ogden says: “I’m taken to Cromwell Street to see the remains. So in looking down into this pit, there was the skeleton with the hair in place, black hair. As lawyers, we deal with evidential matters, paperwork and so on.

“But here you are looking at the result of criminality before your very eyes. The kids were right when they talked about Heather, we have found her. This was meant to be finding Heather. End of story. It turned out tragically that it was only the beginning.”

Later West would admit to more murders and eventually there would be 12 confirmed victims of Fred and Rose West. Ogden has appeared in previous docs but has said this is the last time he’s giving an interview on the subject.

Rose West is currently serving a life sentence after being found guilty in 1995 of murdering 10 girls and women, which included her 16-year-old daughter Heather and her eight-year-old stepdaughter Charmaine.

Fred West never stood trial as he took his own life in prison in January 1995 after nine sets of bones were found under the couple’s house.

The audio in this documentary, some of it unheard before, make it clear he was the culprit and he is chillingly heard talking about his crimes.

Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story is a described by Netflix as the definitive documentary series revealing the lives and crimes of Britain’s most notorious and prolific husband and wife serial killers.

It will feature a family member who have never spoken before; Dezra ‘Dez’ Chambers the sister of Victim Alison Chambers. Others speaking for the first time are Sir Brian Leveson who acted for the Prosecution against Rose West and local journalist Rachel Carlyle, the journalist who broke the story for the local paper.

Viewers watching the three part series will also from other family members of some of the victims who have rarely spoken, giving insight into the pain and torment they went through for decades.

Previously unseen police video and unheard audio recordings, will show how the Gloucestershire police were able to unearth the remains of the West’s 12 victims to build a case against them.
