“Inquiry into Police Officer’s Hells Angels Friendship”

-

An independent inquiry commenced in Saskatoon on Monday to decide on the appropriateness of police officers’ friendships. Former Sgt. Robbie Taylor was terminated in March due to his association with an individual linked to the Hells Angels biker gang. Taylor contested the dismissal, and an impartial mediator is now evaluating the circumstances from both perspectives. Ronni Nordal is overseeing the proceedings, which will feature testimonies from various witnesses, including Chief Cameron McBride.

Brian Pfefferle, Taylor’s legal representative, argued that Taylor was discharged for his connection with someone allegedly associated with outlaw motorcycle clubs. He contended that the police service’s concerns about Taylor’s associations were unwarranted. Ashley Smith, representing the Saskatoon Police Service, raised the issue of whether Taylor’s “undesirable association” compromised his suitability as a police officer. Chief Cameron McBride determined that Taylor’s relationship had jeopardized his integrity, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.

During the inquiry, police gang analyst Matthew Matieshin testified about Taylor’s relationship with the biker associate. Matieshin, who had known Taylor professionally for over a decade, expressed reservations about the association after discovering the man’s ties to the Hells Angels through surveillance. Taylor had intervened in a traffic stop involving his friend, which Matieshin found inappropriate and concerning. Taylor later disclosed additional details about his friend’s connections to the Hells Angels, including accepting gifts like an expensive watch.

The inquiry will resume on Tuesday and is anticipated to continue throughout the week.
