Investigative journalist’s home bombed in Italy, sparking press freedom concerns

-

A bomb explosion outside the home of investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci is seen as a direct threat to press freedom in Italy by his colleague. The incident occurred late on Thursday in Campo Ascolano, south of Rome, damaging two vehicles belonging to Ranucci’s family and sparking widespread condemnation from advocates of a free press.

Ranucci, the host of the investigative TV news program “Report” on RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster, is known for exposing organized crime, corporate wrongdoing, and government corruption. Aldo Ciccolella, senior editor of “Report,” expressed deep concern about the attack, stating that it sends a chilling message to all journalists that they could be targeted next.

Fortunately, neither Ranucci nor his family members were injured in the explosion caused by a rudimentary one-kilogram bomb placed outside his residence. Ranucci recounted that the bomb detonated shortly after his return home, just after his daughter had passed by the vehicles. Despite the shock, Ranucci assured the public that everyone was unharmed.

The incident shed light on the ongoing threats faced by Ranucci due to his investigative work, with reports of regular intimidations and even bullets left near his home. Ranucci has had police protection since 2009, which was increased in 2021 following an assassination threat. Despite the attack, Ranucci affirmed that it would not silence him and vowed to continue his work.

The bombing has stunned Ranucci’s team, as such violent acts against journalists are not uncommon in Italy, particularly in regions influenced by organized crime. The suspects in the attack are numerous, given “Report’s” history of exposing corrupt practices involving politicians, corporations, foreign entities, and criminal syndicates.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the bombing, focusing on potential mafia connections. The Italian journalists’ federation reported an increase in acts of intimidation against reporters, with physical assaults rising from the previous year.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attack as a severe act of intimidation, emphasizing the importance of defending press freedom. International organizations, including the International Federation of Journalists, have also denounced the incident and called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Ciccolella reiterated Ranucci’s commitment to press freedom, affirming that “Report” will continue its work despite the attack. While RAI provides security and government support for Ranucci, Ciccolella highlighted the need for all journalists, especially those in investigative journalism, to remain vigilant while fulfilling their duty to report.
