“Island Flotillas Unite in Historic Gesture”

-

Flotillas originating from islands situated along the Canada-U.S. border are set to convene midway today in a gesture celebrating the enduring friendship between the two nations amidst prevailing political tensions. Anticipated to participate are up to 100 boats departing from Orcas Island in Washington state, located approximately 60 kilometers south of Vancouver, B.C., and another group sailing south from Salt Spring Island. This event, named Hands Across the Water, marks its inaugural gathering, emphasizing the spirit of islanders and the vitality of the local community in the late season.

Hands Across the Water was conceived during a conversation between Lyle MacWilliam, a former MLA and author, and friends on Orcas Island, reflecting on the relationship between Canada and the U.S. Concerned about the state of affairs, MacWilliam shared with CBC’s On The Island how the initiative was born out of a desire to improve the situation. Crediting his friend Ross Newport, a resident of Orcas Island, for spearheading the idea, MacWilliam highlighted the sentiment among locals about Canada’s treatment, prompting the symbolic gesture of boats heading north to meet Canadian friends.

Justin Paulsen, a council member representing Orcas Island, swiftly embraced the concept, emphasizing the historical ties between Orcas Island and Salt Spring Island. The event serves as a reminder that despite the border, these islands share a longstanding relationship that predates the current boundaries, facilitating free movement of people, trade, and familial connections.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by both islands in terms of housing and climate change, Gary Holman, Salt Spring Island director for the Capital Regional District, underscored the importance of fostering connections between individuals on both sides of the border. Additionally, the event presents a favorable opportunity for business on Salt Spring Island as activities extend throughout the weekend.

Safety measures have been taken into account for the gathering, with both the Canadian and U.S. coast guards notified of the event. The Canadian Coast Guard will accompany the local flotilla to ensure a safe and successful event. The symbolic handshake between the flotillas is scheduled to take place at Welbury Bay on Friday, September 19, at 3:30 p.m. PT, followed by an opening ceremony at Salt Spring Island’s Centennial Park at 5:30 p.m.
