Israel’s military has initiated the initial phase of an operation to gain control of Gaza City, as confirmed by Israeli military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin on Wednesday. After a confrontation with Hamas in the southern region of Khan Younis in the enclave, Defrin emphasized the escalation of the offensive against Hamas in Gaza City, described as a hub of governmental and military terror for the organization. Defrin reported that troops have already started encircling the periphery of Gaza City, noting that Hamas now faces a weakened guerrilla force.
“We have commenced preliminary operations and the initial phases of the assault on Gaza City, with IDF forces currently positioned at the outskirts of Gaza City,” mentioned Defrin. Israel’s military has mobilized tens of thousands of reservists in anticipation of the impending attack on Gaza City, amid considerations for a potential ceasefire following almost two years of conflict. The decision to call up reservists signifies Israel’s determination to capture Gaza’s largest urban center despite global disapproval of an operation that could lead to further displacement of Palestinians.
A military official disclosed that reserve soldiers are not expected to report for duty until September, allowing mediators a window to address the differences between Hamas and Israel regarding the terms of a potential truce. In a separate incident, Israeli forces clashed with over 15 Hamas militants who emerged from tunnels near Khan Younis, engaging in gunfire and anti-tank missile attacks. The confrontation resulted in severe injuries to one Israeli soldier and minor injuries to two others, as confirmed by an Israeli military source.
Hamas’ al-Qassam Brigades acknowledged carrying out a raid on Israeli troops in the southeastern area of Khan Younis, engaging in close combat with Israeli forces. The statement mentioned that one fighter detonated himself among the soldiers, causing casualties, during the prolonged exchange that unfolded over several hours.
