Jack Wilshere will take charge of Norwich City for their final two matches of the season. The former Arsenal and England star, 33, will take charge after manager Johannes Hoff Thorup was dismissed in the light of recent form dubbed “embarrassing” by striker Josh Sargent.
“Jack Wilshere will take charge of the first team on an interim basis for our two remaining Sky Bet Championship fixtures,” the club wrote on social media. “He will be assisted by Tony Roberts and Nick Stanley.”
Norwich confirmed the departure of Hoff Thorup and assistant Glen Riddersholm on Tuesday. The Canaries sit 14th in the Championship and lost their last league game away at Millwall.
“Whilst we made this appointment with a long-term focus and in line with our wider club strategy and direction, unfortunately recent results and performances have deemed it necessary for us make a change,” Norwich’s sporting director Ben Knapper said.
“I’d like to place on record our sincere thanks to Johannes and Glen. They are both fantastic people who worked tirelessly to help improve and move our football club forward. We all wish the two of them the best in the next stage of their respective careers.”
Norwich sat in eighth place in the Championship as recently as February and were knocking on the door of the play-off spots. They have won just one of their last 14 games, though, and striker Sargent pulled no punches after a pair of defeats over the Easter weekend.
“Embarrassing. That’s it,” United States international Sargent said (per The Pink Un). I don’t have much more to say. The fans are deservedly very upset. We had so many out here supporting us and travelling today, and it’s just nowhere near good enough from us.
“It just comes down to doing basic things right. I’m not going to say we didn’t work hard because there are guys working hard, but just doing the basics right.”
Norwich’s next league game comes away to play-off chasers Middlesbrough, while they will finish their campaign at home to struggling Cardiff City. The finale will see Wilshere up against his former Arsenal team-mate Aaron Ramsey, who took interim charge at Cardiff after the dismissal of Omer Riza.
Wilshere himself has experience of management with Arsenal’s Under-18 side. He led the young Gunners to the FA Youth Cup final in 2023, losing to West Ham, before leaving to join Hoff Thorup’s coaching staff at Norwich in October 2024.
