Joni Mitchell and Drake are set to be honored with special achievement awards at the 2025 SOCAN Awards ceremony. The renowned songwriters, representing different eras, are among the distinguished creators being recognized at the event celebrating Canadian songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
Joni Mitchell will be presented with the Cultural Impact Award for her iconic 1969 track “Both Sides Now,” which is praised for its lasting impact on music and culture, inspiring multiple generations with its timeless beauty and profound creativity.
Drake, on the other hand, will be receiving his fourth consecutive award for songwriter of the year in the performer category, acknowledging his significant influence as a key voice in the music industry.
The SOCAN Awards ceremony is scheduled for September 29 at Toronto’s Rebel concert venue, where winners across various categories will be announced.
In addition to Mitchell and Drake, other notable honorees this year include the songwriting trio of Lowell, bülow, and Nathan Ferraro, who will be recognized with an international achievement award for their contributions to Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
Toronto producer Boi-1da will also be acknowledged with the Global Impact Award for his notable contributions to rap and R&B music, including works with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and Drake.
Each award recipient will be presented with “The SOCAN,” a trophy that serves as a musical instrument, with this year’s custom bronze crotales tuned to the notes from “Both Sides Now.”
