“Juno Awards 2026: New Latin Music Category Added”

-

Organizers of the Juno Awards, Canada’s premier music awards show, have announced their intention to introduce a new category for Latin music recording at the 2026 ceremony. This new award will highlight Canadian musicians who have released music in various Latin American languages and genres during the eligible year.

The addition of the Latin music category is part of the Junos’ ongoing efforts to acknowledge the diversity within the Canadian music landscape and to reflect the evolving national music scene. In recent years, the Junos have expanded their recognition by including a South Asian music category and splitting the Indigenous category into two segments to honor both contemporary and traditional Indigenous artists.

Furthermore, adjustments have been made to the rap categories in response to requests for greater clarity regarding the participation of Canadian MCs. The updated regulations specify that for entries in the rap single and rap album or EP categories to be eligible, at least 50% of the vocals must be performed by Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

The 2026 Juno Awards are scheduled to be held in Hamilton, with the main event broadcast from Hamilton Arena, formerly known as FirstOntario Centre, following its completion of a $290 million renovation. Juno week is set to run from Thursday, March 26, to Sunday, March 29, culminating in the 55th Annual Juno Awards presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).

CARAS President and CEO Allan Reid expressed excitement about bringing the event back to Hamilton, citing the city’s vibrant music scene and cultural heritage as key factors in selecting it as the awards’ host city. The event will receive financial support from the city, with a $500,000 contribution from a reserve earmarked for conventions, sports, and events, along with an additional $300,000 from the Hamilton Tourism Development Corporation.

Hamilton previously hosted the Juno Awards in 2015, and the return in 2026 is eagerly anticipated by music enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
