Jurgen Klopp breaks silence on Liverpool title win with message to Arne Slot

Must read

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has taken to social media to offer his congratulations to Arne Slot and the Reds after they clinched the Premier League title with four games to spare at the weekend.

Klopp, 57, spent just shy of nine years in the Anfield hotseat before stepping down at the end of last season. He won Liverpool’s 19th domestic title during his tenure, plus the Champions League and both domestic cups, meaning Slot had some mighty big shoes to fill.

The former Feyenoord chief has enjoyed a stunning debut season, though, establishing Liverpool as England’s top team. And after watching Slot sing his name on the Anfield pitch in the wake of Sunday’s 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham, Klopp has toasted Liverpool’s latest title triumph on Instagram.

Alongside a snap of the weekend’s celebrations, Klopp wrote: “Super grateful for the past, super, super happy about the present, extremely positive about the future! Congratulations – YNWA. Thank You Luv.”

Klopp recently teased that he was planning to return to Merseyside for the first time in next month’s season finale vs Crystal Palace: the match where Liverpool would be officially crowned as champions should they win the league.

Speaking at a fundraiser in Cape Town back in March, Klopp confirmed: “Yes, the plan is [to be in Liverpool] but not on the bus, I will be there with the people I saw on the bus.

“That’s the idea to be honest, but we will see. I think I will be there for the last game… I didn’t want to go earlier to be honest because I didn’t want to jinx it all the time. If I’m in the stadium for the first time and they lose, ‘oh f*** sake’. So I go there when it’s decided.”

Slot was welcomed to Liverpool by Klopp, who sang the former Feyenoord chief’s name during his farewell address at Anfield last year. And the Reds boss showed his class by returning the favour as the celebrations got underway on Sunday.

“It feels great. I don’t think I want to say a lot. The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp,” Slot told Liverpool TV, before chanting “Jurgen Klopp, na, na, na, na.”

He continued: “The way we arrived on the bus, everyone was thinking there is no way we were going to lose this game. Conceding first made it difficult, but they always find a way to win.

“Incredibly proud, but not only of the players. Everyone knows what effort they’ve put in over the last few years. Everyone standing here, you [the fans] should give them a wonderful applause as well.

“Let’s forget that it’s the second [title] in 35 years, it’s the second in five years.”
